EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
To sit for the Exam: 120 semester hours including a bachelor's degree, with a minimum of 30 semester hours of accounting, auditing, and related subjects. For licensure: 150 or more semester hours of college credit including a baccalaureate degree, with a minimum of 42 semester hours of accounting, auditing, and related subjects (26 V.S.A. section 71a).
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of experience in public accounting (or Board-approved equivalent), including 500 hours of attest work and 200 hours of auditing work, totaling roughly 2,080 hours, completed within no less than one and no more than four years prior to applying for licensure.
SEPARATE ETHICS EXAM REQUIRED?
Vermont requires a course of study in professional ethics equivalent to 8 hours of continuing education, covering the AICPA Code of Conduct or Vermont's own accountancy statutes/rules; CARE did not confirm this is a separate standalone exam as opposed to a coursework requirement.
CAN YOU SIT FOR THE EXAM BEFORE FINISHING ALL EDUCATION?
Yes — candidates can typically sit for the Exam before finishing all coursework required for full licensure (e.g. at 120 semester hours, finishing the rest before licensure).
APPLICATION NOTES
Vermont's substantive requirements live in statute (26 V.S.A. section 71a) rather than on a detailed public Board requirements page; the Secretary of State's Office of Professional Regulation administers applications. Vermont also offers a 'Fast Track Endorsement' for CPAs already licensed elsewhere for the prior 3 years.
